Council Tax and Housing advice
Council tax Council tax is a tax applied to residential properties in England, Wales and Scotland (but not Northern Ireland). Council tax is applied to properties, not people, but exemptions from paying the tax are based on the sort of people who live in the property. A property is exempt from council tax if everyone who lives there falls into at least one of several categories, including full-time college or university students. As such, full-time students are usually exempt from paying Council Tax.
Providing you are enrolled onto a full time course with the University you can be issued with a Council Tax Exemption Certificate within the first two weeks of your course starting. The best way for you to request this by via the My ULaw app > Self Service Portal > Request a Letter.
Please note that if you are on a part time course or the standalone SQE Prep course you do not qualify for council tax exemption.
